Why Your Gutters Overflow in Heavy East Tennessee Rain
When a hard rain rolls through East Tennessee, you might see water pouring over the front edge of your gutters like a little waterfall. It looks dramatic, but it usually points to a simple problem. Here is what is going on and what you can do about it.
Most Overflow Starts With a Clog
Leaves, pine needles, and shingle grit build up over time. We have a lot of trees around here, and fall drops a steady load of debris into open gutters. Once that pile gets wet, it packs down and blocks the flow. Water backs up and spills over the edge instead of heading to the downspout.
If you only see overflow in one spot, that section is where the clog sits. Clear it out and the water usually runs fine again.
Check the Downspouts, Not Just the Gutters
A clean gutter will still overflow if the downspout is plugged. Debris slides down and jams at the elbow or where the spout meets the ground. An easy test is to run a hose into the top of the downspout and watch the bottom. If little comes out, you found your problem.
Pitch and Sagging Gutters
Gutters need a slight slope toward the downspout so water keeps moving. Over the years the hangers loosen and a section sags. Water pools in the low spot and pours over instead of draining. You can often spot the dip from the ground after a rain, when water sits in one area long after the storm passes.
Refastening or adding hangers fixes most of this. If the fascia board behind the gutter has gone soft from old leaks, that needs attention first before new hangers will hold.
Sometimes the Rain Is Just Too Much
Now and then the gutter is doing its job and the roof is simply shedding more water than a standard gutter can carry. Steep roofs and big valleys dump a lot of water into one short stretch all at once. In those spots, a larger gutter or an extra downspout makes a real difference.
Why Overflow Is Worth Fixing
Water spilling over the edge lands right against your foundation and siding. Over time that leads to wet crawl spaces, washed-out mulch beds, and rot along the fascia and soffit. Fixing a gutter is cheap next to fixing what the water damages.
What to Handle Yourself and What to Call About
Clearing debris and flushing downspouts is fair weekend work if you are steady on a ladder and someone is home with you. Leave the steep sections, the second-story runs, and any soft wood behind the gutters to someone with the right setup. There is no prize for a fall off a ladder.
